You can&amp;rsquo;t just sit around waiting for a convection oven to warm up. When you&amp;rsquo;re moving fast, you need heat that hits the mark &lt;em&gt;right now&lt;/em&gt;—and just as importantly, heat that can shut off instantly so you don&amp;rsquo;t blow past your annealing point.&#xA;Short-wave infrared (IR) lamps are pretty much the only way to get that kind of speed.&#xA;&lt;strong&gt;The problem with &amp;ldquo;middleman&amp;rdquo; heat&lt;/strong&gt;&#xA;Traditional heaters work by warming up the air, which then warms up the glass. It&amp;rsquo;s slow. It&amp;rsquo;s clunky. And for online annealing, it&amp;rsquo;s just not going to cut it.&#xA;With short-wave IR, we skip the air entirely. The energy goes straight from the filament to the glass. It&amp;rsquo;s a direct hit. You can ramp up the temperature in a few seconds, which means you can push your line speed faster without worrying about internal stresses ruining your batch.&#xA;&lt;strong&gt;Dealing with the raw power&lt;/strong&gt;&#xA;When you&amp;rsquo;re working with thicker glass, you need real penetration. That&amp;rsquo;s why we use high-wattage quartz tubes. You want that core temperature to hit the sweet spot before the piece even thinks about moving to the next conveyor stage.&#xA;But here&amp;rsquo;s the thing: that much power creates a lot of heat. To keep your lamps from burning out way too early, you&amp;rsquo;ll want some forced-air cooling on the back of the reflectors.
