
Why Fast-Response Infrared is the Only Way to Handle Online Glass Annealing
If you’re running a glass production line, you know the drill. You can’t just sit around waiting for a convection oven to warm up. When you’re moving fast, you need heat that hits the mark right now—and just as importantly, heat that can shut off instantly so you don’t blow past your annealing point. Short-wave infrared (IR) lamps are pretty much the only way to get that kind of speed. The problem with “middleman” heat Traditional heaters work by warming up the air, which then warms up the glass. It’s slow. It’s clunky. And for online annealing, it’s just not going to cut it. With short-wave IR, we skip the air entirely. The energy goes straight from the filament to the glass. It’s a direct hit. You can ramp up the temperature in a few seconds, which means you can push your line speed faster without worrying about internal stresses ruining your batch. Dealing with the raw power When you’re working with thicker glass, you need real penetration. That’s why we use high-wattage quartz tubes. You want that core temperature to hit the sweet spot before the piece even thinks about moving to the next conveyor stage. But here’s the thing: that much power creates a lot of heat. If you’re packing 3000W+ per lamp into a tight space, your housing is going to soak it all up. To keep your lamps from burning out way too early, you’ll want some forced-air cooling on the back of the reflectors. It keeps things stable. Keeping it running Nobody wants to spend their afternoon rewiring a rack. We design these systems for quick swaps. Using standard connectors means your maintenance crew can just pop a new lamp in and get the line moving again. We use quartz envelopes because they can handle the shock of rapid heating and cooling without cracking. Just a heads-up, though: these things are picky about fingerprints. A single smudge of oil on the quartz can create a hot spot, and that’s a one-way ticket to a broken tube. Keep them clean, or just throw a protective shield over them and save yourself the headache.
