
Fixing Those Pesky Cold Spots in Glass Annealing
If you’ve ever worked with glassware that has a weird shape—think tight necks, sharp shoulders, or tapered bases—you know the nightmare of “dead zones.” Standard kilns rely on convection, but air is lazy. It doesn’t always want to push into those tight recesses. That leaves you with internal stress in the glass, and before you know it, a piece you spent hours on just shatters for no apparent reason. It’s frustrating. We found a better way: sticking shortwave infrared (IR) heating lamps right into the kiln. How the heat actually gets there Instead of trying to warm up the air and hoping it hits the glass, IR lamps send out radiation that goes straight through the surface. We set these lamps up in a multi-axis array, basically wrapping the heat around the vessel. It’s a direct line-of-sight energy transfer. We use shortwave quartz emitters because they pack a ton of power into a tiny space. You can tuck them much closer to the glass than those bulky, old-school resistive elements. Picking your gear To get up to temperature without waiting forever, high-wattage halogen tubes are the way to go. Depending on your plant’s power grid, you’re probably looking at 230V or 400V lamps. And a quick tip on connectors: stick with R7s or Sk15. Why? Because lamps eventually burn out. When that happens, you want a quick drop-in replacement. You don’t want to spend your afternoon rewiring a whole rack just because one bulb quit. The tricky part Now, this isn’t a magic fix. You have to be careful. A 2000W tube puts out a massive amount of heat. If the glass is too close, you’ll get localized overheating, which leads to thermal shock. To stop that, you’ll need to dial in the distance and use PID controllers to pulse the power. Also, keep an eye on your cooling system. All that heat builds up around the lamp housings, and if you aren’t venting it, you’re going to fry your wiring. One last thing—don’t just line the lamps up in a row. Stagger them. This makes sure that if a glass shoulder casts a “shadow,” there’s another lamp hitting it from a different angle. That’s how you actually kill off every last cold spot.
