
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (And Dry)
Let’s be real: putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is basically like inviting a fight with moisture and steam. If you get the insulation wrong, you’re looking at current leaks or, worse, a short circuit. That’s why we stick to an IP55 rating. In plain English? The first ‘5’ keeps the dust out, and the second ‘5’ means the housing can handle water jets. It’s the baseline you need to make sure splashes don’t hit the live guts of the machine.
How we actually stop the leaks
The real battle happens at the junction points. That’s where things usually go sideways. We use high-temp silicone seals and moisture-resistant potting compounds right where the wires enter the chassis. It stops “capillary action”—which is just a fancy way of saying it prevents water from literally sucking itself into the terminal blocks. Also, always use grounded aluminum housings. We make sure the bond between the heating element supports and the chassis is rock solid. Why? Because if a wire ever rubs through its insulation and hits the frame, the breaker trips instantly. It keeps the outer shell from becoming electrified.
Dealing with the heat
Infrared lamps get scorching. If you use standard PVC wiring, that heat will eventually eat the insulation away. Not a good look. We swap those out for fiberglass-braided silicone wires that can handle up to 200°C. These cables don’t crack or melt, no matter how many times you flip the switch on and off. To be safe, we test the dielectric strength at twice the operating voltage. It’s just a way to prove the insulation gap is wide enough to stop arcing, even when the room is thick with steam.
A few things to watch out for
Here’s the catch: IP55 protection is great, but it traps heat inside the unit. Don’t make the mistake of burying these heaters in a tight soffit. You need a gap for air to move. If you block that airflow, the internal parts will basically bake, and your capacitors and wiring will die way sooner than they should. And for a little extra peace of mind? Wire it up to a GFCI. It’s a simple move that adds a massive layer of safety.
