Ever stepped into a bathroom, flipped on the infrared heater, and felt like you were staring directly into the sun? It’s a common problem. Most of these lamps use short-wave radiation to get you warm instantly, but the trade-off is that blinding glare. Now, if you’ve got kids or babies in the house, that’s a real issue. You can’t just blast raw IR light everywhere; you have to be careful about what’s hitting those sensitive eyes.
Making it easier on the eyes
We handle this by tweaking the quartz glass and the filament. Instead of just leaving it raw, we use specific dopants in the glass or add a thin-film coating. Think of it like a pair of sunglasses for your heater. It filters out those harsh blue-light peaks and the intense glare, pushing the energy toward the long-wave spectrum. The result? You feel the warmth on your skin, but the light stays soft and gentle. It’s just basic physics.
The trade-off
Here’s the thing: you can’t have everything. A clear quartz tube is the fastest way to get heat, but it’s blinding. When we go with a “soft-light” coating, we lose a bit of that visible brightness. You might notice it takes a few seconds longer to feel the heat compared to a raw lamp, but for a home—especially one with a family—it’s a trade-off worth making for the sake of safety.
Getting it installed right
Most of these fit into standard R7s or push-in sockets, so swapping them out is a breeze. We also use parabolic reflectors to push the heat straight down. There’s no point in heating up the space between your ceiling and the roof—that’s just wasted energy. One quick tip: if your bathroom gets really steamy, double-check your housing. You want something rated for high moisture. If the seals are leaky, your sockets will corrode and the filaments will burn out way too fast. Keep the wiring tight and the seals snug, and you won’t have to deal with that annoying flickering.
