It’s just bleeding out into the machine housing and heating up your shop for no reason. We figured out a way to stop that leak using precision reflectors.
Where is the heat actually going?
Standard IR lamps throw heat in every direction—a full 360-degree blast. Think about that. Roughly half of the energy you’re paying for is hitting the walls of your machine instead of your workpiece. Our reflectors act like a mirror for heat. They catch that wasted energy and bounce it right back onto the glass. You get a much more intense heat flux without having to crank up the wattage. Higher temperatures, lower power bill. It’s that simple.
Picking the right gear
Not all reflectors are created equal. Depending on your lamps, you’ll want either high-purity aluminum or gold-coated substrates. If you’re running shortwave IR, you need a different reflectivity curve than you would for medium-wave. Gold-coated options are the heavy lifters here—they handle higher heat loads and don’t oxidize nearly as fast as polished aluminum. But here is the catch:**geometry is everything.**Your reflector has to match your lamp length perfectly. If your focal point is off by even a few millimeters, you’ll end up with hot spots. That leads to uneven bends or internal stress in the glass, which is a nightmare to fix.
A quick heads-up on the trade-off
There is one thing to watch out for. Because the reflector pushes heat back toward the source, your lamp’s quartz envelope is going to run hotter than it used to. You can’t just ignore this. Make sure your cooling fans are up to the task, or you’ll risk burning out the lamp ends. A little extra airflow goes a long way here.
What this means for your shop
The real win is in the kilowatt-hours. These reflectors are basically a drop-in replacement for most standard bending frames.
