
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (and Actually Working)
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom isn’t as simple as slapping on a waterproof cover and calling it a day. You’ve got steam, splashes, and high humidity—basically a recipe for electrical disasters if you aren’t careful. If you’re aiming for that IP55 standard, you really only need to worry about two things: how well the box is sealed and how the wires are insulated.
Dealing with the Steam
Here’s the thing about IP55: it’s designed to keep out dust and handle water jets coming from any angle. But in a steamy bathroom, moisture finds a way. It sneaks into standard housings. To stop that, we use silicone gaskets and sealed cable glands. If water manages to bridge the gap between the heating element and the chassis, you’ve got a ground fault on your hands. Not great. We avoid that by using high-temp ceramic insulators to keep the quartz tube completely separate from the outer shell.
The Boring (but Vital) Stuff: Insulation
We don’t take chances with electrical insulation. We use materials that can handle the voltage without breaking a sweat. The wiring is wrapped in fluoroplastic or silicone sleeves. Why? Because standard plastic melts or cracks when things get hot. We test every unit for leakage current to make sure the outer casing stays “dead”—meaning you won’t get a shock when you touch it. **And a quick heads-up:**check your grounding. Even with the best IP55 protection, you need a solid earth connection. If something does fail inside, you want that breaker to trip instantly.
The Great Heat Trade-off
There is a catch, though. When you seal a heater up tight to keep water out, you’re basically creating a thermal bottleneck. Heat builds up inside the housing because it has nowhere to go. If you don’t get the airflow just right, that trapped heat eats away at the internal wiring. It’s a balancing act. You need the seal to be tight enough to keep you safe, but open enough so the lamp doesn’t cook itself from the inside out. Get that balance wrong, and your heater will burn out way sooner than it should.
